Murfreesboro TN Declares War on Dessert!

June 13, 2009

So it’s finally come to this.  Not even chocolate is safe from the evil clutches of the KGB…oops I mean the Murfreesboro Vice Squad.  Evidently, months of careful planning and investigation allowed the boys in blue to break up a ring of drug dealers planning to smuggle hallucinogenic brownies into this week’s Bonnaroo music festival.  Thank you Murfreesboro PD for making sure all the hippies are jacked up on crank this weekend instead of lying on the grass counting the pink unicorns dancing in the sky.  I mean, that’s SO much safer!

Pitchfork is live-tweeting Bonnaroo and so far there have been no riots from the brownie-starved crowd.  Al Green, Passion Pit, Animal Collective, Grizzly Bear and Ani DiFranco have already played.  Check out the AT&T music feed for live streaming.  Check out Yeasayer and MGMT, who play Saturday night after Springsteen, beginning at 1am.  Oh, and don’t forget everyone’s favorite girl, Jenny Lewis, playing Saturday afternoon right before Elvis Costello.

Elsewhere, it appears that the long-rumored collaboration between Bright Eyes (Conor Oberst and Mike Mogis), My Morning Jacket’s Jim James, and She and Him’s Matt Ward actually happened.  Christened Monsters of Folk, the supergroup will release a full-length album in September.  Word is that Ozzy Osbourne is looking into taking legal action against the group for damages and a cut of merchandising money due to the fact that he played on the Monsters of Rock tour in 1986 and his wife has assured him that he owns the copyright for the word “monsters”.

In the “Great Music You Might Not Know About” department, Johannesburg South Africa’s BLK JKS (pronounced Black Jacks) announced this week that they’re dropping thier full-length album After Robots in September.  If you’ve never heard of BLK JKS and have any interest at all in world music, do yourself a favor and check them out.  They released the fabulous Mystery EP earlier in the year and I’m hoping their new effort will be even better.  If you want to give them a try, hop over to RCRD LBL for a free and legal download.

OK, that’s about all I got folks.  I depart wishing you all peace, love and Gourds.  Later!
