Obama Appoints the Foo Fighters Prime Ministers…of Rock!

July 4, 2009

How does Dave Grohl do it?  When the Foo Fighters started out, everyone thought they were a novelty band…they had a song called “Weenie Beenie” on thier debut album for crying out loud!  They were seen as a lighthearted Nirvana, almost as if their very existence was to prove that Grohl wasn’t as angst-ridden as it seemed when he was in the “other band”.

But somewhere along the way, Grohl turned this thing into an actual band, and a darn good one at that.  More consistent live than they are on record, the Foo Fighters have turned into arena rockers that can legitimately be mentioned in the same breath as U2 and Green Day in terms of record sales and the ability to fill up a stadium.

Need proof that the Foos have arrived? At the request of President Obama, they’re playing the White House today for the annual 4th of July party.  They will be one of only a handful of artists to perform at the direct request of the President of the United States, certainly an honor.  Also, not to be outdone by rock contemporaries Sammy HagarConor Oberst and Neil Finn in organizing a rock supergroup, Dave Grohl has a new side project that includes Queens of the Stone Age’s Josh Homme and former Led Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones.

In other rock-supergroup news, another memberof QOTSA, Dean Fertita, has teamed up with none other than professional-supergroup-organizer Jack White himself to form the Dead Weather. The group will debut a new song in a short film by director Jonathan Glazer on Cinemax on July 11.  And if by “short film” you were thinking “soft porn flick”, you just might be right.

For anyone in the Chicago area in the middle of July, I recommend checking out the Pitchfork Music Festival, happening July 17-19.  Artists performing at the festival include heavyweights Beirut, Yo La Tengo, Grizzly Bear, and The National.  TBTS faves Yeasayer and one of my favorite current bands The Antlers will also be playing Saturday the 18th.

Lastly, what would summer be without some jams?  Here at TBTS we got ya covered.  First up, SubPop Records recently released their Cybersex summer music sampler.  This is a great introduction to one of the premier indie rock labels on the planet.  Don’t let the cheesy html design fool you, this stuff is smokin’!  Next, what’s summer without good dancehall reggae?  Don’t worry, we’ve got that covered too thanks to the Heat Wave.  Finally, our good buddies over at Gorilla vs. Bear have a downloadable summer mix of terrific music that’s guaranteed to lower your body temperature when you listen.  We hope you enjoy the music, Happy 4th!
