TBTS Reviews: 5 Popular Music Videos, Bush Teach Old Dog Old Tricks with “The Sound of Whiner…er, Winter”
Christina Perri, “A Thousand Years”: For fans of that Twilight business. Just a vehicle for related visuals. If that’s your bag, have at it. Not a very strong song or resonant video, even though they (poorly) carry a wedding theme, but the lush cinematography scores some points. Somebody had some cash that would have been better suited for creatives with vision. Kinda like the movies and books.
Bush, “The Sound of Winter”: After all these years, the band still has it: that elusive, ill-defined quality of no particular quality. At least Gavin is still pretty; you notice this by watching him pace around angstily on the beach and “emoting” in the studio with his cans on, perfecting his vocal lines. I can only imagine what those sessions were like: “Turn my motherfucking headphones up!” and “Where’s my gel at?” Talk about creatives with no vision–the winter is an artistically cold one for the Bush boys. Gwen must wear the muse pants in this family. Shiver.
The Script, “Nothing”: They say a few drinks will help you to forget her. I only need one to make me forget the song and utterly empty video. Maybe she would have stayed with you if you had brought something original to the table, other than fingergloves and trite suicide cliches. I recommend straying from this script if you want the part.
Beyonce, “Party”: She’s hot. That’s all I got. A trailer-park-party ditty featuring not one person who’s set foot one *in* one. Romantic, eh?
Cobra Starship ft. Sabi, “You Make Me Feel…”: She’s hot, Sabi. The Cobra guy looks like he’s riffing on Vanilla. Not a bad club number. It’s not especially a standout video (whodathunkit–a club song *set in a club*, about club antics!), but I wager it is due for some capable remixer. Secret about me: I used to dance. A private dancer. You know–for money. Where was I? Any chance of Grace Slick or Marty Balin guesting on a future track?
